ECB Rate Decision and Big Tech Earnings Set Up a Crucial Week for the Global Economy

There is plenty for investors to watch this week, from a major European interest rate decision to fresh economic data and heavyweight company earnings. With several updates arriving within days, markets could soon get a clearer picture of where the global economy is heading.

ECB decision ahead

All eyes will turn to the European Central Bank on Thursday, July 23, when officials announce their latest interest rate decision. Rates are widely expected to remain unchanged following earlier cuts, so what could really move markets? Much of the attention will fall on ECB President Christine Lagarde and her comments about inflation, economic growth and global trade.

Should Lagarde hint at another cut in September, the euro and European bond yields could face pressure. A more cautious message may lead investors to rethink their expectations for further reductions this year.

Fresh economic figures arrive Friday, when preliminary July manufacturing and services PMIs from the U.S., Eurozone and Japan offer an early look at third-quarter activity. Investors will be watching U.S. services and signs of improvement in manufacturing. Japan’s core inflation figures and U.S. new home sales are also due.

Earnings take over

Away from central banks, some of America’s biggest companies are preparing to report. Alphabet, Tesla, Texas Instruments and ServiceNow release results Wednesday, putting AI spending, cloud growth, electric vehicle demand and semiconductor conditions under scrutiny.

Thursday brings Intel and American Airlines, offering insight into chip demand, Intel’s foundry operations and summer travel trends. Earlier in the week, 3M and General Motors will provide clues about manufacturing, vehicle sales and tariff pressures.

By Friday, American Express could reveal more about consumer spending and credit quality, while ExxonMobil’s results may show how oil prices are affecting the energy business. Other releases worth watching include China’s Loan Prime Rate, U.S. jobless claims, housing figures and weekly crude oil inventories.
