Dogecoin Falls 8% as Whale holdings Rise Amid Weak Technical Signals

Dogecoin falls nearly 8% from its weekly open, but large investors seem to be moving in a different direction. An October 17 snapshot showed the cryptocurrency nearly 8% below its weekly open, yet whale balances had risen. That contradiction raises the central question: can accumulation matter while price momentum remains weak?

Whale holdings rise despite losses

The October 17 Binance DOGE/USDT snapshot showed Dogecoin near $0.0802, down from a weekly open of $0.08678, a 7.6% decline. Dogecoin also fell below $0.081, a key price level highlighted by analyst Ali Martinez, where blockchain data showed about 36 billion DOGE had previously changed hands. Such a concentration can attract traders, though prior transactions don’t guarantee fresh buying at that level.

Yet the price decline did not coincide with a decline in whale balances. Citing Santiment estimates, Martinez reported that tracked large holders increased their collective DOGE holdings from about 55.6 billion on October 12 to 56.2 billion on October 16. The 600 million increase indicates a reported balance shift, not necessarily purchases on exchanges. That distinction leaves the apparent accumulation encouraging to some observers, but still inconclusive.

Weak technical signals cloud recovery

That uncertainty also shows up in the technical charts. Dogecoin traded below its daily Bollinger Band midpoint near $0.0885, while a negative Awesome Oscillator reading pointed to weak momentum. A daily TD Sequential buy signal, also highlighted by Martinez, suggested a possible short-term turning point. Neither indicator signals what comes next, especially as price remains below a closely watched level.

Those mixed signals make nearby price zones worth watching. An October 17 CoinGlass heatmap showed modeled liquidation concentrations around $0.0773 and $0.0844, areas of potential leveraged-market pressure rather than guaranteed targets. A sustained recovery above $0.081, supported by broader demand, would offer firmer evidence than wallet movements alone. For Dogecoin, durable growth ultimately depends on sustained buying, not isolated signals.
