Cisco Stock Is Surging, but IBM Could Be the Better Buy for Retirees

Choosing the right dividend stock can make a significant difference for investors approaching retirement. Technology giants IBM and Cisco Systems offer different advantages depending on individual investment goals. A recent comparison suggests that IBM could be the better choice for immediate income, despite Cisco’s impressive stock market performance this year.

IBM delivers stronger income

Cisco shares have performed strongly in 2026, supported by growing demand for AI networking infrastructure. IBM, on the other hand, has struggled following disappointing quarterly earnings. Despite this difference, IBM offers nearly twice the dividend yield of its rival, making it more attractive to retirees seeking regular income. Its higher quarterly payments also mean shareholders can receive more cash without selling their investments.

Financial stability provides another reason to consider IBM. The company uses approximately 42% of its free cash flow to fund dividends, compared with Cisco’s 51%. This leaves IBM with a larger financial cushion to maintain payments during difficult periods. However, its substantial debt and an ongoing securities fraud inquiry remain important risks for investors to consider.

Cisco offers faster growth

Investors with longer retirement timelines may find Cisco more attractive, particularly when considering its record of dividend increases. Since 2021, the networking company has raised its quarterly payout by 13.5%, compared with IBM’s modest 3% growth.

Future earnings prospects also favour Cisco, which expects AI infrastructure revenue to approximately double to $7.5 billion. IBM faces a different situation after reporting a 42% decline in second-quarter mainframe revenue alongside a 19.67% drop in operating income.

Valuation, however, gives IBM another advantage. Its shares trade at approximately 17 times forward earnings, below Cisco’s multiple of around 27 times fiscal 2026 adjusted earnings. These differences make IBM more appealing to retirees seeking higher dividend income today, while Cisco offers stronger prospects for long-term dividend growth.
