Crypto Experts Reveal Key Indicators for Predicting Short-Term Market Trends

Cryptocurrency prices can change rapidly, making short-term movements difficult to predict even for experienced traders. 11 industry experts have shared the indicators they use to assess market direction, spot potential reversals, and manage trading risk. Their insights suggest that understanding leverage, trading activity and investor behaviour may be more useful than relying on price charts alone.

Reading market signals

Siim Kostabi, CEO of Pageloot, recommends Bitcoin’s logarithmic channel, which places short-term price movements within longer market cycles. He argues that reactions around the channel’s midline can help identify potential trend changes.

Other experts favour indicators that reveal market participation. Dr Ahmad Dilshad highlights spot cumulative volume delta (CVD) alongside perpetual futures open interest, while Ahmed Yousuf examines trading volume to distinguish convincing breakouts from weaker rallies.

Patrick Vishy, creator of No Nonsense Forex, prefers the moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator for identifying early trends. Roman Vasilenko recommends comparing on-chain transaction activity with price movements, while Sudhanshu Dubey tracks exchange inflows and outflows to assess selling pressure and accumulation.

Leverage reveals risks

Several contributors place greater emphasis on derivatives markets, particularly perpetual futures funding rates. Justin Belmont considers unusually positive or negative funding a warning of overcrowded positions. Saravana Kumar claims his six-year Bitcoin backtest found that negative funding preceded price increases within seven days in 95% of cases.

Arvind Rongala recommends combining funding rates with open interest to distinguish fresh positioning from short covering. Similarly, Callum Gracie treats extreme funding as a measure of market pressure rather than a reliable directional forecast. Sergey Kalinin takes a different approach, prioritising liquidation prices and leverage exposure over predicting future movements. Overall, the experts emphasise combining multiple signals while recognising that no indicator guarantees accurate cryptocurrency forecasts.
