Uber or MercadoLibre? One Stock Emerges as the Stronger Buy for 2026

Digital platform giants MercadoLibre and Uber Technologies offer investors different opportunities as both companies continue expanding their global operations. Strong revenue growth, profitability and valuation have become important considerations when comparing their long-term potential. A recent Motley Fool analysis published on October 4 favours Uber as the stronger investment for 2026, despite MercadoLibre’s faster growth.

MercadoLibre leads revenue growth

Operating across 18 Latin American countries, MercadoLibre combines e-commerce, digital payments and logistics through its expanding marketplace and fintech ecosystem. Its 2025 revenue reached approximately $28.9 billion, representing a 39.1% annual increase, while net income approached $2 billion with a 6.9% margin.

Free cash flow totalled roughly $10.8 billion, although continued investments in shipping, credit services and infrastructure have pressured profitability. Financial indicators included a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.7x and a current ratio of approximately 1.2x. Competition from low-cost Asian platforms, currency fluctuations and changing regulations in Brazil and Argentina present additional challenges.

Uber offers stronger profitability

Uber generated nearly $52 billion in 2025 revenue, an 18.3% annual increase, alongside approximately $10.1 billion in net income. Its 19.3% profit margin and $9.8 billion free cash flow demonstrate stronger earnings performance despite slower revenue growth. Beyond ride-hailing, the company continues expanding delivery and freight operations, supported by autonomous vehicle partnerships and its recently announced Delivery Hero acquisition agreement. However, employment classification disputes, regulatory scrutiny and competition from Lyft and DoorDash remain significant risks.

Valuation figures further favour Uber, which trades at 20.2 times forward earnings compared with MercadoLibre’s 44.1 times. Their price-to-sales ratios remain relatively close at 2.5x and 2.4x, respectively. The Motley Fool ultimately prefers Uber’s diversified operations, established profitability and comparatively attractive earnings valuation. MercadoLibre nevertheless retains considerable long-term growth potential as digital commerce and financial services expand throughout Latin America.
