Questrade Financial Group of Toronto has acquired federal regulatory approval to start Questbank, marking its official entry into the Canadian banking industry. The decision comes after the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) issued a final order authorizing Questrade to begin banking activities. This permission allows Questrade, a prominent online brokerage with over CAD $85 billion in assets, to diversify its offerings beyond financial services to include a full suite of digital banking products.

From application to approval

Questrade began its path to becoming a federally regulated bank in 2019 by filing an official notice of intent in the Canada Gazette under the Bank Act. The OSFI’s multi-stage licensing process requires securing letters patent, then an order to begin operations.

Now, Questrade has completed this procedure and received regulatory approval to operate Questbank as a digital-first financial institution. This milestone demonstrates Canada’s financial authorities’ increasing willingness to welcome new companies that can boost competition and innovation in the sector.

What Questbank means for consumers

Questrade’s goal with Questbank is to give Canadians a fully digital banking experience in addition to its established investment platform. The startup intends to provide a comprehensive suite of banking services, joining the rising number of fintech firms that combine technology and finance to produce accessible, customer-centric solutions. The new bank will launch products aimed at increasing financial flexibility and affordability, two areas where consumers have sought alternatives to established institutions.

A boost to fintech innovation and competition

Online brokers and investment platforms are expanding into banking to create full financial ecosystems, as seen with Questrade. Digital-first institutions like EQ Bank and Motusbank have reflected a similar shift. Questrade’s action could encourage more innovation in Canada’s developing financial sector and increase competition in digital access, integrated financial management, and deposit rates.
