Economic momentum is picking up across the Gulf, and the latest World Bank outlook suggests the region is entering a new phase of growth built on digital expansion and gradual diversification. The forecast now expects GCC economies to grow 4.5% in 2026, with gains already visible in 2025 as national strategies push job creation and reduce reliance on oil.
The UAE is on track to lead the region with 4.8% growth next year, driven by a balanced mix of oil, non-oil activity, and an increasingly diverse export base. Saudi Arabia follows with a revised estimate of 3.8%, up from an earlier 3.2% projection.
The upgrade reflects renewed strength across sectors despite softer oil prices and a rising debt-to-GDP ratio near 32%. Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait are also expanding, though at varying speeds shaped by fiscal pressure, external surpluses, or shifting export markets.
The Gulf’s digital turning point
Technology has become the defining force behind the region’s economic shift. Nearly universal 5G access, large-scale investment in data centers, cloud systems, and high-performance computing have positioned the Gulf as a digital frontrunner.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE now rank among global leaders in artificial intelligence readiness, supported by growing venture funding, advanced e-government services, and fast adoption of generative AI applications.
Some challenges remain. Fossil fuels still anchor budgets, meaning oil prices continue to influence fiscal planning. Labor transitions, environmental considerations, and uneven digital adoption across sectors could slow progress if not managed carefully.
Yet ambition clearly outweighs hesitation. Women’s participation in STEM fields now surpasses the global average, digital skills are rising, and SMEs are being encouraged to adopt AI as part of national innovation plans.
The World Bank says sustained reforms, workforce reskilling, and a more unified regional digital market will determine whether the Gulf’s transformation becomes permanent, and competitive at a global scale.
