Metaplanet Begins Joint Study of Bitcoin-Backed Digital Credit in Japan

Metaplanet is moving beyond holding Bitcoin. The Tokyo-listed company has begun a joint study with Metaplanet Securities, JPYC, and Progmat to examine how Bitcoin-backed digital credit, tokenized securities, and yen-linked settlement could operate within Japan’s regulated financial system. The effort remains preliminary, but its implications could be significant for investors.

Why the joint study matters

Project NOVA connects four distinct capabilities. Metaplanet contributes its Bitcoin treasury and corporate strategy. Metaplanet Securities brings a licensed brokerage and an existing private-bond platform. JPYC is studying yen-denominated payment and redemption functions, while Progmat supplies infrastructure to record investor rights and manage tokenized securities. Together, these roles explain how the study could move from concept toward regulated financial use within Japan’s established investor-protection framework.

That infrastructure does not mean a product is ready. Metaplanet has announced no issuance date, final structure, yield, investor eligibility, or distribution method. The company acquired Siiibo Securities for ¥2.1 billion, approximately $12.8 million, giving it a practical channel for future offerings. However, any launch still depends on technical reviews, internal approvals, regulatory discussions, and evidence that Bitcoin-backed credit can operate responsibly for investors and Japanese market participants.

Building trust before any launch

Trust will determine whether Project NOVA can move from study to market. Japan already regulates stablecoin-related electronic payment instruments and tokenized securities, giving the initiative a credible foundation. Still, Bitcoin’s volatility demands disciplined collateral management, secure custody, transparent pricing, and clear safeguards for severe market declines. Without those protections, innovation would struggle to earn lasting investor confidence.

With them, Metaplanet could evolve from a major Bitcoin holder into a builder of regulated digital-finance infrastructure. For investors and readers following financial news, Project NOVA may offer a practical bridge between digital assets and established credit markets. Success remains uncertain, but careful execution could unlock new products, attract broader participation, and support durable growth across Japan’s expanding digital economy over time.
