SoFi Technologies, Inc. has launched SoFi Crypto trading inside its existing banking app. This makes it the first nationally chartered and FDIC-insured consumer bank in the United States to offer integrated digital assets within a regulated banking platform.

Through this setup, members can buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana within the same app they use for everyday banking and investments. This removes the need for third-party exchanges and allows users to manage traditional and digital assets inside a single regulated environment.

The FDIC insurance protects customer deposits up to 250,000 dollars while funds remain in checking or savings accounts. Traditional crypto exchanges do not provide this safeguard. With SoFi, insured status applies until the moment money converts into crypto. This reduces the risk that usually comes with transferring funds to external platforms.

Regulatory shift behind the launch

SoFi paused its earlier crypto trading service in 2023 as part of the process of securing its national bank charter. At that time, federal expectations for banks that wanted to engage with digital assets were unclear.

In early 2025, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the federal regulator of national banks in the United States, released updated interpretive guidance that clarified how banks could offer crypto related services while maintaining required safety and compliance standards. This provided a more dependable framework for banks preparing to introduce digital asset features under federal supervision.

The clearer federal guidance helped make the launch possible. SoFi Crypto also reflects member demand for a safer and more compliant way to access digital assets. Internal surveys show that around 60% of their crypto-owning members prefer trading through a licensed bank rather than a standalone platform.

Plans to evolve the platform

The rollout begins with a portion of SoFis 12.6 million members and will expand over the coming weeks. The company has expressed interest in exploring a USD pegged stablecoin and studying how digital assets may support future lending products. These plans remain in early stages, but they reflect SoFis intention to build a broader and aligned digital asset ecosystem.

This move sets a new benchmark for convenience and compliance that other consumer banks will be expected to match. Institutions once reluctant to handle digital assets may now feel compelled to reconsider their strategies in the years ahead.
